Abstract

Africa is the second-largest continent by land area and one of the most geographically diverse regions on Earth. Its geography encompasses enormous deserts, tropical rainforests, grasslands, highlands, mountains, river systems, lakes, extensive coastlines, islands, fertile agricultural zones, mineral-rich regions, and rapidly growing cities. Geography has profoundly influenced African civilizations, migration, agriculture, trade, political boundaries, economic development, biodiversity, and patterns of human settlement.

Africa’s physical geography is characterized by large plateaus, relatively limited lowland areas, major drainage basins, and extensive climatic variation. The continent stretches across the Equator and reaches into both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, producing a remarkable sequence of climatic and ecological zones.
